WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President George H.W. Bush is publicly criticizing for the first time key members of his son’s administration.
The New York Times reported Wednesday that (http://nyti.ms/1WxsEZb ) a biography of the nation’s 41st president to be published next week contains sharply critical assessments of former Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
In interviews with biographer Jon Meacham, Bush says that Cheney asserted too much “hard-line” influence within George W. Bush’s administration. He says he thinks the Sept. 11 attacks changed Cheney and his approach to the use of U.S. military force.
The elder Bush was harsher about Rumsfeld, calling him “arrogant” and saying, “I think he served the president badly.”
Of his son, Bush said he empowered Cheney and Rumsfeld and sometimes used rhetoric that was too strong.
