Elon Musk: Tesla’s autopilot ‘probably better than a person’

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 11 (UPI) — Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk announced a new feature, “Summon,” that allows drivers to call their cars to pick them up — or have them park perfectly in a tight space.

The feature, still in the beta stage, is part of a software update for the car’s “Autopilot” functionality announced Sunday.

“I think within two years you’ll be able to summon your car from across the country,” Musk told reporters.

Tesla’s current “Autopilot” function is “probably better than a person right now,” he said, adding that soon Teslas “will be able to drive virtually all roads at a safety level significantly better than humans.”

Musk recently told Fortune magazine about building cars with the autonomous functionality, adding, “I think we have all the pieces, and it’s just about refining those pieces, putting them in place, and making sure they work across a huge number of environments—and then we’re done.”

“Autopilot” was enabled in October via the 7.0 update, along with the latest edition of the Model S, which comes standard with the “Summon” feature.
