Emilia Clarke talks ‘Games of Thrones’ casting, Cate Blanchett inspiration

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 30 (UPI) — Emilia Clarke recently opened up about the auditioning process for Game of Thrones and how she based her character on Cate Blanchet’s Elizabeth.

The 29-year-old English actress sat down with TheWrap Wednesday for their 2015 Power Women Breakfast and revealed how she originally did not fit the description for her character, Daenerys Targaryen on the hit HBO fantasy drama.

“The role of Khaleesi (Daenerys) is tall and willowy and blonde, I’m short and round and brown,” she said. “So they weren’t, like, she can do that role, easy!”

However when Clarke was chosen, the actress prepared for the role by drawing inspiration from Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth.

“Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth was something I watched a lot in preparation for season one,” Clarke mentioned. “And the fact that it’s rooted in reality, to know I was able to replica a real, strong female leader.”

So strong in fact, that Clarke admitted Daenerys’s strength has rubbed off on her.

“Being able to play this strong girl, you can kind of take notes and see how I can apply that to my own life.”

Clarke last made headlines iearlier this month when she was named Esquire magazine’s Sexist Woman Alive for 2015.
