ESPN history ‘Those Guys Have All The Fun’ being adapted to film for Focus Features

MILFORD, Conn., Feb. 16 (UPI) — Nonfiction author James Andrew Miller confirmed he is currently adapting his 2011 bestseller Those Guys Have all the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN into a movie for Focus Features.

Miller, who also wrote Live From New York: The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, appeared on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday to discuss SNL’s 40th anniversary after party. In the course of the interview, Patrick and producers successfully goaded Miller into accidentally confirming he is working on bringing Those Guys Have All The Fun to the big screen, with a script in the vein of The Social Network.

Ok, @dpshow got me. Downright delighted to be writing script at @FocusFeatures for @espn movie based on “Those Guys Have All the Fun.”#espn— James Andrew Miller (@JimMiller) February 16, 2015

“You saw Social Network…you saw Moneyball…in that vein.” @JimMiller on the tone of the @espn movie.— Paul Pabst (@PaulPabst) February 16, 2015

“The movie is going to cover several different periods,” Miller told the former ESPN anchor, now best known as the face of NBC’s NFL coverage. Patrick was intently concerned with who would play him for the portion of the film that covered SportsCenter’s “Big Show” era, and how much of the film would concern his infamous tenure alongside Keith Olberman.

“I broke up the story in, I hope, an inventive way,” Miller explained to Patrick, adding, “Its not going to be about one particular year or one particular person.”

Patrick wasn’t the only notable ESPN ex-Patriot to speculate about his Hollywood portrayal. NFL Network host and fellow SportsCenter alumnus Rich Eisen posted a poll question on his radio show’s official website, asking listeners if he should be played by John Krasinski, Jaoquin Phoenix or Chris Pine. Leonardo DiCaprio was also included in Eisen’s poll, presumably as a joke by one of his producers.
