Chaska (United States) (AFP) – British Open champion Henrik Stenson birdied the ninth hole to grab a 1-up lead on Jordan Spieth as Europe made a charge at the United States in Sunday’s Ryder Cup singles matches.

European golfers were ahead in five matches, with Stenson taking his first lead in his match, and all square in five others with all 12 matches under way at Hazeltine on the final day of the biennial team showdown.

The US team, having lost three in a row to Europe, carried a 9 1/2 – 6 1/2 lead into the final day at Hazeltine.

Europe is trying to become the first team to rebound to claim the trophy after losing the first four matches, giving the US that edge in Friday alternate shot foursomes.

The Americans are trying to avoid surrendering another “Miracle at Medinah,” the 2012 matchup in which they led 10-6 entering singles but lost 14 1/2 – 13 1/2 to the greatest comeback in Europe history.

Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed were all square in their opening contest of Cup stalwarts.
