PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — A former employee of a maximum-security prison in northern New York will pay nearly $80,000 in restitution the state sought to cover damage caused by two inmates who cut their way out.
A prosecutor said during Joyce Mitchell’s court hearing Friday that she’ll pay $79,841 for the damage Richard Matt and David Sweat caused by using hacksaw blades and other tools she provided to break out of Clinton Correctional Facility last June.
The prosecutor said repair costs came in under the initial estimate of $120,000.
The 51-year-old Mitchell pleaded guilty in September to charges related to the escape and was sentenced to 2 1/3 to seven years in prison.
After a three-week manhunt, Matt was shot dead in woods about 30 miles northwest of the prison. Sweat was shot and wounded two days later.
