Fenninger leads Maze after 1st run of WCup giant slalom

MERIBEL, France (AP) — Defending World Cup champion Anna Fenninger posted the fastest time in the first run of a giant slalom race on Sunday, with rival Tina Maze placing second.

Fenninger is 18 points ahead of Maze in the overall standings and will win the title if the positions stay the same after the second run later Sunday.

World GS champion Fenninger was .27 seconds ahead of Maze, the Olympic champion in the discipline.

The 25-year-old Fenninger is also trying to defend her GS crystal globe, and led countrywoman Eva-Maria Brem by 86 points ahead of the race.

Brem was .43 behind in third after the first run.
