VERO BEACH, Fla., Dec. 16 (UPI) — Authorities in Florida said a suspect was high on designer drug Flakka when he tried to break into jail by crashing his car into glass doors.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office shared a video on Facebook showing the 2002 Toyota, driven by Patrick Rempe, 24, colliding with the front doors of the Indian River County Jail.
A pane of glass on one of the doors shatters, but the doors hold their integrity and stop the car without opening.
The sheriff’s office said Rempe then crashed his car into a fence, damaging the structure, and climbed the fence before becoming stuck in the razor wire on the inner perimeter of the jail.
Deputies said Rempe admitted his was “high on Flakka” and said he wanted to visit friends inside the jail.
The sheriff’s office said Rempe was arrested, but he didn’t get his wish — he was held under supervision at the Indian River Medical Center instead of the jail.
“This is what drugs do to you. Flakka is poisoning our youth. Fortunately, none of our deputies were injured and our facility wasn’t compromised,” Sheriff Deryl Loar said.
Rempe is facing charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, three counts of felony criminal mischief, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and driving under the influence. Authorities said more charges are possible as the investigation continues.
