LOS ANGELES, Dec. 27 (UPI) — Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the No. 1 movie in North America for a second weekend after earning an additional $153.5 million in receipts in the United States and Canada, Rentrak announced Sunday.
Variety said the seventh installment in the beloved space saga has set a new record for reaching the $1 billion global milestone the fastest. The movie hit the mark in 12 days, one day quicker than the previous record-holder — this summer’s Jurassic World.
Coming in at a distant second at the North American box office this weekend is Daddy’s Home with $38.8 million, followed by Joy at No. 3 with $17.5 million, Sisters at No. 4 with $13.9 million and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip at No. 5 with $12.7 million.
Rounding out the top tier are Concussion at No. 6 with $11 million, The Big Short at No. 7 with $10.5 million, Point Break at No. 8 with $10.2 million, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 at No. 9 with $5.3 million and The Hateful Eight at No. 10 with $4.5 million.
