CANTON, Ohio, Aug. 10 (UPI) — Despite multiple reports of being kicked out of the NFL Hall of Fame game for allegedly fighting with a fan, Jeff Reed claims his exit was voluntary.
While Reed watched his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, lose 14-3 Sunday night to the Minnesota Vikings, several fans tweeted about an alleged fight between the former kicker and Steelers fans.
Reed, a two-time Super Bowl champion, was removed from the stadium “for being intoxicated and getting into a confrontation with another fan,” according to the Sporting News.
Reed played for the Steelers from 2002 to 2010. Many fans tweeted the sequence of events, including one picture of Reed conversing with a police officer.
But Reed took to Facebook to tell his side of the story.
“I walked to my seat… a guy in his 40s challenged me, called me every name in the book, told me he’s hated me since the day I signed, threatened me and told me I was worthless,” Reed wrote. “As I saw fear in the faces of some young fans, I chose to go find 3 police officers so that I would not do something I’d regret.”
