ADEN, Yemen, Nov. 17 (UPI) — Yemeni President Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hadi returned Tuesday to the port city of Aden for the second time since he was forced to take refuge in Saudi Arabia earlier this year.
The BBC reports Hadi arrived to supervise a fresh offensive against Houthi rebels in Taiz, to the northwest. It is not clear how long he will stay.
Hadi’s last visit to Aden was in September, after pro-government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, re-captured the city earlier in the summer. Hadi was again forced to leave after renewed rebel attacks, but members of his government have since operated out of the city.
Hadi originally fled to Riyadh in March after Houthi forces seized the capital, Sanaa, before advancing south on Aden.
Around the same time, Saudi Arabia led a coalition of regional Sunni allies in an air and ground campaign against the Houthis, who are associated with Shia Islam.
At least 5,600 people have been killed in Yemen since then.
