RABAT, Morocco (AP) — A former prisoner at Guantanamo Bay has been held for more than six weeks without formal charges in Morocco despite what his lawyers say were U.S. government assurances that he would be quickly released upon return to his homeland.
Younis Abdurrahman Chekkouri, who spent 13 years in Guantanamo without being charged, is expected to appear Wednesday before a Moroccan judge. His brother Ridouane says “it is as if he is in Guantanamo again.”
His family says they haven’t been told why he’s being held, though there are indications it’s linked to alleged past involvement in an extremist group.
His case has angered rights activists. His release was part of a renewed push by President Barack Obama to close the Guantanamo detention center by releasing prisoners deemed to pose no threat.
