French hostage Isabelle Prime freed in Yemen

PARIS, Aug. 7 (UPI) — Isabelle Prime, a French woman abducted in Yemen in February, was freed and will return home, the French President Francoise Hollande’s office announced Friday.

Prime, a consultant on a Yemeni development project funded by the World Bank, was kidnapped in Sanaa, the capital, on Feb. 24, as was her translator, Shereen Makawi, who was released in March. It remains unclear who abducted the pair; it is not unusual for an armed militant group in Yemen to kidnap a hostage, then sell or trade him or her to another group.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Friday negotiations took several months and specifically mentioned that no ransom was paid. A French government statement thanked Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, the Sultan of Oman for his involvement in Prime’s release, without giving details.

French President Francoise Hollande’s office said Prime would return to France within hours.
