Fugitive suspected of killing Orlando officer captured after week-long manhunt

Jan. 17 (UPI) — Orlando police caught a man accused of killing an officer earlier this month Tuesday after a nine-day manhunt.

Markeith Loyd was arrested Tuesday afternoon in connection with the shooting death of Lt. Debra Clayton on Jan. 9. Loyd was arrested using Clayton’s handcuffs, police said.

“We’ve got him! Markeith Loyd in OPD Custody,” Orlando police tweeted after the arrest. “Details to come.”

Clayton had been attempting to arrest Loyd, who was already wanted for the fatal shooting of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, and injury of her brother, when she was shot while approaching him in front of a Walmart.

Loyd escaped police and has been on the run since Jan. 9, with a $60,000 reward for information increased to $100,000 by Orlando Police.

Three people were arrested on Jan. 12 on charges they aided Loyd as he evaded arrest. Earlier Tuesday, the U.S. Marshals Service put Loyd on its Most Wanted list and added another $25,000 to the reward — bringing the total to $125,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Police said at a press conference that Loyd was wearing body armor and carrying two firearms with him, including one with a high capacity magazine, and they showed off the cuffs used to apprehend him.

“This is a man who gunned down a pregnant woman and a police officer who was doing her job to protect our community,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said Tuesday afternoon. “I think every law enforcement officer in Central Florida is actively looking for him.”
