Germany beer consumption up in 2014, helped by World Cup

BERLIN (AP) — Germany saw a slight uptick in beer sales last year, boosted in part by the country’s run to the soccer World Cup title.

The Federal Statistical Office said Thursday that Germans drank 22 million liters (5.81 million gallons) of beer per day in 2014 on average, up from 21.8 million liters (5.75 million gallons) in 2013.

Overall, the office says beer consumption was up 0.4 percent in 2014 to 8 billion liters (2.11 billion gallons).

Brewers saw sales rise 14 percent year-on-year in June, the month in which the World Cup in Brazil began. Germany won the World Cup, its fourth, beating Argentina 1-0.
