San Francisco (AFP) – The San Francisco Giants have signed South Korean infielder Hwang Jae-Gyun on a minor league deal to strengthen their options at third base, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on its website.

Hwang, 29, could earn a $1.5 million payday if he manages to force his way onto the roster for the Giants upcoming Major League Baseball season.

Hwang is reported to be the first Korean player to sign for the Giants, who tried out Lee Hak-Ju in a training camp last year but did not sign him.

Hwang has spent the past seven seasons with Korea Baseball Organization team the Lotte Giants, and enjoyed the best season of his career in 2016, with 27 home runs and 113 RBIs.

He also dramatically reduced his number of strikeouts, cutting his 2015 tally of 122 to 66 in 2016.
