WILMINGTON, Del., Dec. 18 (UPI) — Gillette is suing Dollar Shave Club Inc., claiming its coating on razor blades violates a Gillette patent.
Gillette, a division of Proctor & Gamble that has been selling shaving products since 1895, demands in the suit filed in Delaware on Thursday that the court block sales by the mail-order razor blade sale-by-subscription company.
The lawsuit says Gillette’s patents on razor blade technology were infringed, in particular one issued in 2004 and referred to in the suit as the “‘513 patent,” in which layers of carbon, chromium and polytetrafluoroethylene are applied to a blade to reduce friction. Gillette says Dollar Shave Club has used the patent in manufacturing its own products, and is asking for a jury trial and monetary damages.
The suit mentions that Dollar Shave Club has acquired over two million customers, or 10 percent of the shaving market, and has shipped 44 million razor blades since it began its service in 2012, quoting the company’s advertising.
