LOS ANGELES, Oct. 27 (UPI) — The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation or GLAAD, has released their annual “Where We Are on TV” report that examines the overall diversity and number of LGBT characters present on television.
Their new findings released Tuesday reveal a lack of transgender characters present in scripted programming. According to the report, transgender characters are entirely absent from primetime television, while only three recurring trans roles were found on cable.
Numbers start to rise however when streaming services are looked at like Amazon, Hulu and Netflix, which GLAAD measured for the first time this year. Streaming content boasts the highest percentage of transgender characters at seven percent compared to cable’s two percent of all characters. Shows such as Amazon’s Transparent and Netflix’s Sense8 lead the way with transgender series leads.
“The expansion of television landscape into digital platforms is helping spark needed changes as content creators like Netflix and Amazon are making their mark with groundbreaking series like Sense8 and Transparent,” said GLAAD CEO and President Sarah Kate Ellis.
The report also highlighted findings about racial diversity on TV and mentioned how it is increasing along with LGBT characters on cable.
