Springfield (United States) (AFP) – American Robert Streb matched the record-low 18-hole score in major championship golf history Friday with a seven-under par 63 in the second-round of the PGA Championship at Baltusrol.

Streb shot the 30th 63 in a major by sinking a birdie putt at the par-3 ninth, his final hole of the round after starting on the back nine, to finish 36 holes in a share of the lead at nine-under par 131 with countryman Jimmy Walker.

Few people were watching Streb on the ninth green as top-ranked Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson were finishing at the same time on 18.

“It was pretty noisy for only 15 people being out there,” Streb said. “They knew to make a racket when the putt went in.”

In all, Streb had eight birdies and a lone bogey to become the 28th player to score 63 in a major, Vijay Singh and Greg Norman having done it twice.

Baltusrol has been the venue of the most 63s of any major course with four, including two of only four in US Open history, the 63s of Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf in the first round in 1980.

The third came at the 2005 PGA Championship by Thomas Bjorn in the third round and the fourth was produced by Streb, 27, who missed the cut in all three prior majors this year. His only US PGA title came last season at the McGladrey Classic.
