MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 16 (UPI) — Google continues to celebrate Star Wars: The Force Awakens by creating a new free browser game that turns users smartphones into a lightsaber.
Released for Google Chrome, “Lightsaber Escape” has players waving their smartphone left and right in order to deflect blasters and attack First Order Stormtroopers while fleeing a Star Destroyer.
To launch the application, Chrome users must visit g.co/lightsaber and then type in another url into their smartphone to calibrate it for the game. A lightsaber will then appear on the phone which is activated by touching an on-screen button.
After a quick training session, players will then get in on the action as their lightsaber movements are translated from the phone onto the screen.
Google’s latest experiment comes as part of the company’s ongoing partnership with Disney and Lucasfilm to promote the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In November, the tech giant asked fans to join either the Light Side or the Dark Side of The Force to change the look of various google apps including Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube among others.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens nationwide Dec. 18.
