Governor, advocate seek answers in Utah inmate’s death

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah’s corrections department says inmates and their family members have complained in the past about dialysis treatment at the state prison.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams said Wednesday evening that there have been several complaints, but she does not know the nature of the complaints or what may have been done to address them.

Adams says the department is interviewing inmates about any complaints made to the prison as part of its investigation into an inmate’s death that occurred after dialysis providers failed to show up for his treatment.

Officials say 62-year-old Ramon C. Estrada died Sunday from an apparent heart attack related to kidney failure.

Adams says officials are still trying to figure out if anyone tried to contact the missing dialysis providers and when they did so.
