SACRAMENTO, Sept. 4 (UPI) — Authorities are searching for a gunman who opened fire at a community college in Sacramento Thursday afternoon — killing one man and wounding two others, officials said.
The gunfire erupted at about 4 p.m. local time in a parking lot at Sacramento City College. Apparently, police said, the four men had some kind of dispute in the parking lot that led to the gunfire.
“It started as a verbal dispute and escalated from there to fists, then to weapons,” a college spokesman told the Los Angeles Times. “One young man pulled out a semi-automatic handgun from his pocket and began shooting.”
One of the victims died and the other two were hospitalized with injuries. One of the victims received serious injuries, while the other’s were minor, officials said.
Authorities locked down the campus and ultimately evacuated the entire school by 8 p.m.
The unidentified gunman was described as a Tongan man wearing a white T-shirt and beige shorts. Authorities were not immediately certain whether he is a student at the college, like all three victims are.
Classes were canceled Thursday evening due to the police activity on campus, but will resume Friday.
