Gwyneth Paltrow to live on $29 a week

NEW YORK, April 11 (UPI) — Queen of luxury Gwyneth Paltrow has accepted friend Mario Batali’s challenge to eat on only $29 this week, and it’s all for a good cause.

Chef Mario Batali is a member of New York City’s Food Bank board, which launched a campaign to raise awareness about recent cuts to the SNAP program. Congress decided to cut the program’s budget twice in 2013, Batali explains on the {link:cause’s website: “http://www.foodbanknyc.org/how-you-can-help/food-bank-nyc-challenge”,nw}. He posted {link:a video: “https://twitter.com/Mariobatali/status/584011605018456065″,nw} April 3 calling for Paltrow to take the Food Bank NYC Challenge.

Paltrow, 42, accepted the challenge, tweeting a photo of her off-brand groceries with the caption, “This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store—what families on SNAP (i.e. food stamps) have to live on for a week,” as proof.

In the past, Gwyneth Paltrow has undergone scrutiny for her expensive taste. The self-proclaimed food writer founded the site Goop.com, which features swanky recipes targeted toward the rich. The site promotes several detoxes, one of which costs up to $115 a day. However, the actress told Bloomberg that critiques against Goop.com are a “miscommunication.”

Despite her supposed filthy-rich lifestyle, Paltrow’s expanding influence may cause Food Bank challenge to explode. She reportedly passed the baton, nominating Korean chef Roy Choi, owner of the successful L.A.-based gourmet Korean taco truck, Kogi.
