LOS ANGELES, April 7 (UPI) — John Travolta, a well-known Scientologist, dismissed HBO documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief in a recent interview, citing his personal experiences with the faith.
The documentary delves into the religion’s dark underbrush with the help of accusatory stories from former members. Its March 29 release provoked a call from the public for John Travolta and Tom Cruise to comment, as the film specifically urges the stars to turn against Scientology.
Travolta, 61, said in a phone interview with the Tampa Bay Times that he does not intend to see the film. “I’ve been so happy with my experience [with Scientology] in the last 40 years,” he said, “that I really don’t have anything to say that would shed light on [a documentary] so decidedly negative.”
The film, based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright’s book, portrays Scientology as an entity that exploits its members, leaving many abused, abased, and on the wayside without a voice. It focuses on eight former members.
Going Clear ruffled a lot of feathers among the Scientology elite, forcing the Church to release a slamming official response. In a statement released by the Church’s Freedom Magazine, both Gibney and Wright are accused of seeking out and highlighting the most “obsessive, disgruntled” anti-Scientologists whom are driven to “making lies about the church for money.”
