WASHINGTON, June 5 (UPI) — Hillary Clinton, front-runner in the Democratic run for the White House, won the U.S. Virgin Islands Democratic Caucuses, according to preliminary numbers provided by the local Democratic Party.
The preliminary total shows the presidential hopeful with 1,308 votes to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 190.
The win inches Clinton closer to clinching the Democratic nomination, which she is expected to capture in the next few days, CNN reported.
Clinton picked up all seven pledged delegates at stake as she inched ever so close to the Democratic nomination., USA TODAY reported.
The Democratic Party said Clinton won 84.2% of the vote, while Sanders earned 12.2%. Under Democratic National Committee rules, a candidate must win at least 15% of the vote to be eligible to receive the delegates.
The Virgin Islands vote, along with Puerto Rico, which holds its nominating contest Sunday, comes as Clinton and Sanders battle over Democratic super delegates. Sanders argues that his stronger polling position against Donald Trump should tip the party’s scales in his favor.
Sanders said Saturday he would try to woo Clinton’s super delegates in an effort to swing the nomination his way at the Democratic convention.
California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota all hold their primariesTuesday, and Washington, D.C., holds the final nominating contest of the primary season on June 14.
