Washington (AFP) – US House Speaker Paul Ryan, the nation’s top elected Republican, told lawmakers on a conference call Monday he will no longer “defend” or campaign with Donald Trump, keeping his distance from his party’s beleaguered presidential nominee.

“He said he will not defend Trump or campaign with him for the next 30 days,” a person on the call said.

A Ryan spokeswoman, AshLee Strong, said however that the speaker was not rescinding his endorsement of the provocative billionaire but would “spend the next month focused entirely on protecting our congressional majorities.”
