CHICAGO (AP) — A funeral service is underway for Chicago White Sox star Minnie Minoso.
Hundreds of people were attending the service Saturday at Holy Family Church in Chicago.
The Havana native and major league baseball’s first black Latino star died Sunday. He was believed to be 90.
Known as the “Cuban Comet,” Minoso was part of a wave of black players who transformed the game.
Speaking to the crowd, Mayor Rahm Emanuel recalled naysayers who said Minoso had two strikes against him: He was black and Latino. Emanuel said Minoso answered back by hitting a two-run homer in his first time at bat.
A procession immediately following the memorial service will pass U.S. Cellular Field, the home of the White Sox where a statue of Minoso stands.
