WALBRZYCH , Poland, Nov. 10 (UPI) — Treasure hunters hoping to find a train car full of gold and other items looted by the Nazis during World War II began radar scans of the location where they believe the loot to be near Walbrzych, Poland.
Piotr Koper and Andres Richter used metal detectors, ground-penetrating radar and manometers Tuesday to get a better picture of what they have said is a train in a sealed tunnel under a mountain.
Local folklore says a train loaded with gold, jewels and weapons, on its way to Nazi Germany, has been parked under the mountain since 1945, when Nazi troops retreated from the advancing Soviet Army at the close of World War II.
The site has been cleared of trees and checked for explosives by authorities.
“We already know, namely, that under the earth there is a train. We need three days of good weather to carry [additional tests] out. Now that the area is cleared of scrub these studies will be much more accurate,” Koper said Monday.
There have long been rumors, but little investigation, of the presence of a train under the mountain. Trains, delivering valuables to Germany from conquered countries, were common across Poland during World War II.
Koper credited the development of sophisticated technology, now available to amateur researchers, for his discovery thus far.
Local officials suggested it might be spring before any excavation occurs due to pending cold weather and snow.
“At the moment, we are focusing only on noninvasive testing stage,” said local government spokesman Arkadiusz Grudzien, adding it was “too early to talk about extracting anything.”
