June 26 (UPI) — The National Hurricane Center said Dora became the first hurricane of the 2017 season when it formed early Monday, though the storm is forecast to remain offshore.
The NHC said Hurricane Dora, which has sustained winds of 80 mph, is about 170 miles south-southwest of Mexico’s Manzanillo city in the Colima state. The storm system is moving west-northwest further into the Pacific Ocean at a speed of 13 mph.
Dora is generating swells that are causing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions affecting the southwest coast of Mexico.
There are no tropical storm watches or warnings in effect. Dora is expected to strengthen on Monday before it begins weakening on Tuesday and dissipates by early Friday.
The NHC said Dora is expected to drop up to 2 inches of rain in Mexico’s Guerrero and Michoacán states on Monday.
