NEW DELHI, Nov. 5 (UPI) — The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council in India has issued a public notice against network Star World for showing an allegedly “indecent” episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
The episode in question, which shows a homosexual encounter and sexual conversation, has been deemed by the council as “vulgar” and allegedly “denigrates” women. Star World is expected to respond to the BCCC’s notice by Dec. 1, Times of India reports.
Because homosexuality is still illegal in the country, the American show Grey’s Anatomy, like many others, is edited to remain within the confines of India’s media law. “Keeping Indian audiences in mind we felt that the scenes were not tasteful,” said a senior BCCC member in the notice. “So we have asked [Star World] to respond.”
Showrunner Shonda Rhimes responded to similar complaints last year, saying “If you are suddenly discovering that Shondaland shows have scenes involving people who are gay, you are LATE TO THE PARTY.” In an additional tweet, Rhimes disinvited those critical of homosexuality on television from “the party. Bye Felicia,” she wrote.
The episode prompting the official backlash consisted of a female doctor discussing why she can’t please her partner in bed, asking him to demonstrate how to satisfy a woman. Times of India reports the BCCC has received almost 28,000 complaints in response to similar “obscenities” between 2011 and August 2015.
