SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California museum says it has acquired a collection of paintings and other artifacts created by Japanese Americans at World War II internment camps.
The Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles says it will display the collection of works by the people who were imprisoned over fears that they were spies.
Protests in mid-April by Japanese Americans led an East Coast auction house to cancel the sale of 450 photos included in the collection.
Roughly 120,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated at 10 relocation camps after the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Museum officials say the acquisition ensures the artifacts will be properly preserved and honor the interests of Japanese Americans nationwide.
