BAGHDAD, Sept. 17 (UPI) — Two Islamic State suicide bombings at Baghdad markets killed at least 23 people and injured more than 60 Thursday, an Interior Ministry source said.
The attackers, believed to be on foot and wearing explosive vests, detonated bombs at police checkpoints in the crowded Wathba and Haraj morning markets, police said. IS militants have taken responsibility for the attacks.
Ambulances and police vehicles transported victims to area hospitals, suggesting the death toll could rise.
Baghdad has recently been the site of numerous bombings of civilian and government targets and other sectarian violence by IS — also identified as Daesh, ISIS and ISIL.
A recent United Nations report said at least 12,282 civilians have been killed and 23,126 injured in terrorist-related violence in Iraq in 2014, making it the most deadly year in the country since 2006.
