JERUSALEM (AP) —
Israel has given preliminary approval to development plans that could build more than 2,000 homes in West Bank settlements over the next decade.
The plans, first reported by the Haaretz daily Monday, would see about 2,200 homes built in several settlements east of the Palestinian city of Ramallah by 2030.
Hagit Ofran of the anti-settlement group Peace Now said the plans need to pass several more stages and it could be years before work begins. Still, she said it shows “the vision” of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for the area.
Palestinians are demanding the territory as part of their future state. Most of the international community view Israeli settlements there as illegal and hindering efforts for Palestinian statehood.
