Jerusalem (AFP) – Former Israeli president and Nobel peace laureate Shimon Peres was in serious but stable condition early Wednesday after the 93-year-old suffered a major stroke, his office said.

Doctors had decided not to operate on the elder statesman for the time being, a statement said. He was being treated in intensive care, with concern mounting nationwide over his condition.
