James Thrash hired by NFL, NFLPA as appeals officer

NEW YORK, Aug. 17 (UPI) — Former Washington Redskins wide receiver James Thrash will serve as an appeals officer for on-field player discipline.

The parties announced the new hire Monday. Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks will also handle similar appeals. Brooks was hired last year.

Thrash, 40, compiled 3,646 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns on 290 receptions in his 12 year career for the Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. He also ran for 362 yards and two scores on 41 carries.

“Any player who is fined or suspended for an on-field violation — anything from hits on defenseless players to wearing the wrong color socks — has the right to an appeal heard by an independent arbitrator,” according to Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith. “This year the NFL and the NFL Players Association have agreed that Thrash and Brooks will be those arbitrators.”
