NEW YORK, May 12 (UPI) — Jay Leno won’t visit David Letterman on Late Show.
The 65-year-old former The Tonight Show host was invited to appear on the CBS program before Letterman’s departure May 20, but the Late Night presenter told Howard Stern the visit won’t be happening Monday.
“Jay asked me to be on when he was finishing [The Tonight Show], and I said, ‘That’s a lovely offer, but I think it really should be more about just Jay on his final week of shows,’ so I declined,” Letterman explained. “I think he may feel the same way about this situation.”
Leno and Letterman are old rivals whose conflict stems from 1992. The former was chosen to replace Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show over Letterman, causing him to leave NBC and establish Late Show at CBS in 1993.
Leno went on to host The Tonight Show until 2009, when he was temporarily replaced by Conan O’Brien. He returned in 2010 and continued to present until Jimmy Fallon took over the late night program in February 2014.
Letterman announced his retirement in April 2014, and will be succeeded by The Colbert Report creator Stephen Colbert. Former U.S. president Bill Clinton, Julia Roberts and George Clooney are among the celebrities who will appear on Late Night this week.
