LONDON, Sept. 16 (UPI) — Jenna Coleman will reportedly depart Doctor Who after season 9.
Sources told the Mirror the 29-year-old English actress is leaving the long-running BBC series to portray Queen Victoria on a new ITV drama. Coleman’s final episode is expected to air ahead of Doctor Who’s annual Christmas special.
The BBC News website picked up the story, but reported neither the network nor ITV have chosen to comment on the matter. Coleman’s departure was previously rumored last year, but the actress ended up committing to one more season.
“You’re in Doctor Who knowing it will never last,” she said in this week’s issue of Radio Times. “It’s constantly regenerating, so you want to make your time count and enjoy the adventure for the fleeting time you’re here.”
Coleman has portrayed Clara Oswald, companion to the Eleventh (Matt Smith) and Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi), since season 7, and will return on season 9 come Sept. 19. The actress is also known for playing Jasmine Thomas on ITV soap opera Emmerdale.
