NEW YORK, July 21 (UPI) — Actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson says a purpose — not just the quest for a new vacation spot — recently took him to Cuba.

“I just got to go to Cuba, which was really, really interesting,” Ferguson said during a press conference in New York to promote his new animated movie Ice Age: Collision Course, which opens nationwide Friday.

“You sort of have to go with a purpose, which I love,” the actor said of his journey to the communist-run, Caribbean country that was off limits to Americans for decades until U.S. President Barack Obama lifted the travel ban this year. “It wasn’t a trip for the weak of heart. We went and we brought Capezio dance shoes to a dance troupe out there and they performed for us and I was able to immerse myself in the artists that were there and the culture there. We weren’t just having mojitos and smoking cigars. We really got to experience the city and see the parts of the city that I think are not shown on Instagram and Yelp. That was a huge moment for me to see that country. It’s a beautiful country. … It was really cool. I highly recommend it.”

Ferguson is also a longtime Modern Family cast member and can now be seen in the Broadway show Fully Committed.
