NEW YORK, May 19 (UPI) — On Monday night’s episode of The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon delivered a touching tribute to the retiring David Letterman.
The host started off by saying, “Like every kid who grew up watching him, [I] will miss him.” He showed how an eighth grade teacher once predicted he would one day take Letterman’s hosting gig.
After serving 33 years as the host of the Late Show, Letterman’s last show before retirement, will air May 20.
“He’s always just there when you need him. I remember after 9/11, we needed somebody,” Fallon said as he became emotional. “The city was in shock. We’re all looking for answers. We wanted to see what Dave had to say and we looked at him to say something.”
“He said, ‘There is only one requirement for any of us and that is to be courageous, because courage, as you know, defines all other human behavior.’ We needed that. David Letterman is courageous. Have a nice retirement, Dave,” Fallon said.
Other late night talk show hosts like Conan O’Brian, Jimmy Kimmel and John Stewart from The Daily Show also bid farewell by paying their respects to the retiring host.
