Judge to decide if attorney general can investigate Google

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A federal judge says he will rule later this month on whether Mississippi’s attorney general can investigate if Google actively helps people commit crimes, such as buying drugs without prescriptions.

Google says Internet companies aren’t liable for what other people say and do online. The company says Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood is infringing on free speech rights and wants U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate to block Hood from filing civil or criminal charges.

Hood subpoenaed Google last year, asking if the company is helping criminals by allowing its search engine to lead to pirated music, having its autocomplete function suggest illegal activities and sharing YouTube ad revenue with the makers of videos promoting illegal drug sales.

Wingate said at a hearing Friday that he will rule Feb. 24.
