Juneau mayor died of natural causes, autopsy says

JUNEAU, Alaska, Dec. 2 (UPI) — The newly elected mayor of Juneau died of natural causes, a preliminary autopsy found.

Juneau, Alaska Mayor Stephen “Greg” Fisk, 70, was found dead in the living room of his home Monday night. Police revealing Fisk had suffered some injuries stirred speculation the mayor might have met with foul play. There were no signs Fisk’s death was a suicide, police said.

Wednesday’s preliminary autopsy results ended the speculation.

“He did have some history of heart problems, and that’s what we believe it was,” Police Chief Bryce Johnson said.

Fisk’s facial injuries were “consistent with an injury due to falling or stumbling into objects,” the police statement said.

The complete autopsy with toxicology results will still take a few weeks, officials said.

Johnson acknowledged Fisk’s injuries forced police to investigate the possibility of wrong doing at first.

“We preceded, not knowing the cause of death, as if it could be something nefarious. We have an obligation to rule out those possibilities,” Johnson said. “It’s a tragic story for Juneau because we still lost our mayor.”

The mayor missed scheduled appointments for Monday and because he lived alone, Fisk’s son, Ian went to check on him. His son spotted Fisk’s bleeding body through the window, laying in the front room, but the son did not enter the house, Johnson said.

The fisheries consultant was sworn in as mayor of Juneau, a city of 32,000, in October after defeating the incumbent. After Fisk’s death, Deputy Mayor Mary Becker was named acting mayor.
