KANSAS CITY, Kan., Sept. 8 (UPI) — A white supremacist who opened fire last year at a Jewish community center in Kansas, killing three, may have himself been sentenced by a jury Tuesday to die in the execution chamber.
F. Glenn Miller, Jr., who was convicted of the murders last week, appeared in court Tuesday to hear jurors’ recommendation on his punishment. He had represented himself at trial, and actually told jurors Tuesday that he didn’t want any leniency from them.
The jury was faced with one choice: life in prison, or death for Miller. It took them just 90 minutes to settle on the latter.
During the trial, Miller never attempted to claim he wasn’t responsible for the killings of William Corporon, 69, his 14-year-old grandson, Reat Underwood, and Terri LaManno, 53, on April 13, 2014. Instead, he tried to persuade the jury that his actions were justified because, in his opinion, “Jews are taking over the world.”
He also said during the trial that his only regret was not killing more people.
Relatives of the victims were present in the courtroom Tuesday and thanked prosecutors afterward.
“Love, kindness and understanding will triumph over hate,” Tony Corporon, William’s son, said.
“Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the victims, witnesses, and family members impacted by those events,” the statement said. “Hopefully this verdict and completion of the trial will allow those impacted to begin healing.” District Attorney Steve Howe said in a statement.
Before the sentencing, Miller directly addressed jurors and dare them to give the death penalty. At the end of his argument, he gave the Nazi salute and said, “hail, Hitler.”
