Justin Bieber defends Kylie Jenner from cornrow criticism

LOS ANGELES, July 14 (UPI) — On Sunday, Kylie Jenner posted a photo donning cornrows, and Amandla Stenberg accused her of cultural appropriation, but Justin Bieber came to Jenner’s defense.

When Bieber saw how his fellow friend was coming under fire for a simple hairstyle he decided to speak up.

Stenberg, who is known for playing Rue in The Hunger Games, called out the reality star for sporting the look. “When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter,” she commented.

Fans took a screen shot of the “Baby” singer’s response on the Instagram picture, which read: “Guys leave her alone, were all trying to figure it out and she happens to be under a microscope! I’m the first to know this. But saying she’s being racist because she wants her hair in braids is ridiculous. lets focus on the bigger picture and instead of fighting over something stupid lets do something about equality, but it doesn’t start here blasting a 17 year old kid for wearing braids smh.”

On Monday, Stenberg went further into explaining her opinions on Twitter about the double standards African-American women face.

End the “angry black girl” narrative. It’s just another attempt to undermine certain perspectives. I have strong opinions. I am not angry.— Amandla Stenberg (@amandlastenberg) July 13, 2015
