Kelly Rowland to guest star on ‘Empire’ season 2

LOS ANGELES, July 7 (UPI) — Kelly Rowland will guest star on Empire season 2.

The 34-year-old singer will portray Lucious Lyon’s (Terrence Howard) mother in flashback scenes, an insider told E! News. Rowland sparked speculation she would appear on the Fox series after meeting with the show’s writers in June.

Rowland is one of several celebrities who will guest star on the upcoming season. Actress Marisa Tomei, comedian Chris Rock, singers Lenny Kravitz and Alicia Keys, rapper Common and television personality Oprah Winfrey will also appear.

Empire premiered in January 2014, and will return for a second season in the fall. The musical drama follows patriarch and Empire Entertainment CEO Lucious Lyon as he contends with his family and simultaneously struggles with ALS.

Rowland is best known as a member of former R&B girl group Destiny’s Child. The singer previously played Carly on ABC sitcom The Hughleys, Martha on NBC drama American Dreams and Tammy on UPN series Girlfriends.
