WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says Iran may be “days away” from complying with last summer’s nuclear deal, which would compel the U.S. and Western nations to immediately suspend many sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
Kerry says he spoke Thursday by telephone with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. He says the Iranians intend to satisfy their obligations quickly, and the Obama administration is prepared to do likewise.
The U.S. and its partners say they’ll lift nuclear-related sanctions on Iran when the U.N. nuclear agency confirms full Iranian compliance.
Kerry hailed Iran for shipping out most of its enriched uranium last month. He said that step dramatically set back Iran’s nuclear program, and further steps would push it back even more.
