Cannes (France) (AFP) – He is one of the most ruthless presidents on television, but “House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey took aim at real life politicians such as Donald Trump at an AIDS charity event in Cannes.

The master of ceremonies said the event’s usual host Sharon Stone could not be present on Thursday night as she was off fighting another disease “called Donald Trump”.

“Foreign films contain two things Donald Trump hates the most: foreigners and reading,” he told a starry crowd including Leonardo DiCaprio, Katy Perry, Uma Thurman and Adrian Brody.

A stream of Rolls Royces and Bentleys rolled up for the annual American Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR) gala in Cannes, which gathered about 950 of the rich and famous.

For only 500,000 euros ($560,000), one lucky bidder scored a day playing tennis and touring Washington with Spacey, as well as an appearance in “House of Cards” where he plays political operator Frank Underwood.

For 300,000 euros a bidder will spend a week at DiCaprio’s Palm Springs home.

A customised Ferrari in military camouflage was auctioned off for one million euros and a sculpture by Damien Hirst, “Temple”, was sold for 3.1 million euros.

AmFAR was created by Hollywood star Elizabeth Taylor and the gala has been held for 23 years in Cannes where it has become one of the world’s biggest charity events.

Tickets for the event went for 11,500 euros.

Spacey also did impressions of Bill Clinton and the late television host Johnny Carson.

“Vote for her and you’ll get me,” he said as Clinton encouraging people to vote for his wife Hillary.

This year’s amFAR gala raised 22 million euros for HIV/Aids research, down from last year’s takings of 30 million euros.
