LOS ANGELES, Dec. 23 (UPI) — Kurt Russell may play Star-Lord’s dad in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
The 64-year-old actor confirmed as much in an interview with Wolfpop podcast Happy Sad Confused after multiple news outlets reported the casting rumor.
“[The Guardians rumor] is one of those things that’s really funny,” Russell said Monday. “The way the world works today is very different from back in the day when nobody knew about anything. I literally got a phone call two days ago about this.”
“I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy,” he admitted. “I didn’t realize [James Gunn] had written and directed it. So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read it and I have to watch the movie, because I can’t bring anything for you. I got nothing to offer here.’”
Russell had hinted at the role while discussing gun control with the Wall Street Journal last week. The actor confirmed he spoke to Gunn, but said he is focusing on his forthcoming film, The Hateful Eight, which opens Dec. 25.
Guardians of the Galaxy opened in theaters in August 2014, and earned $773 million at the box office. The movie follows the Marvel character Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, and co-stars Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
