March 30 (UPI) — It might be moving to a new city, but the Los Angeles Chargers aren’t forgetting to include legends from its time in San Diego.

One of the franchise’s all-time greats will join the staff as a special assistant to the owner, according to NFL Network. Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson will keep his position with the NFL Network while manning the new gig.

The move was first reported in February but specifics of the role were confirmed Thursday by NFL Network national insider Ian Rapoport.

“I share the Chargers’ commitment to fight for Los Angeles,” Tomlinson said in a statement to The Los Angeles Times. “Alex Spanos created a legacy of devotion to the community, and Dean Spanos and his family have faithfully continued that tradition.

“I’m eager to help guide the Chargers’ efforts to contribute in important and lasting ways to the Greater Los Angeles area.”

Tomlinson, 37, will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. The 2007 NFL MVP ranks No. 5 all-time with 13,684 rushing yards and No. 2 all-time with 145 rushing touchdowns. He is third all-time in overall touchdowns with 162. Tomlinson, a three-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection, played 11 seasons in the NFL for the Chargers and New York Jets.
