LEADING OFF: Wieters back; Tigers, Giants try to end skids

A look at what’s happening all around the major leagues today:

___

WELCOME BACK

Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters is set to come off the disabled list and make his season debut at Cleveland. He’s been out since having Tommy John surgery last June. Manager Buck Showalter is looking forward to the return of the three-time All-Star, but is trying to temper his enthusiasm. “It will be a work in progress,” he said.

SPINNING THEIR WHEELS

After getting swept by the A’s in Motown, the Tigers take a seven-game losing streak into Chicago to face the White Sox. Kyle Ryan makes his second career big league start as Detroit — the four-time AL Central champions — tries to avoid its first eight-game skid since 2005.

WEAVING HIS WAY

Since going 0-4 in his first six starts this year, Angels ace Jered Weaver has made an amazing turnaround. A mechanical adjustment seems to have restored his fastball velocity and he’s 4-0 in his last five outings, giving up a total of eight runs in that span. He’ll start the series opener at Yankee Stadium.

BACK TO WORK

Fresh off visiting President Barack Obama at the White House to celebrate their World Series crown, the Giants hope to end a five-game slide when Tim Lincecum starts in Philadelphia.

FREDDIE’S READY

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman has hit five home runs in seven games going into a weekend series at home vs. Pittsburgh. He’s batting .357 in that span.
