BILLUND , Denmark, Oct. 21 (UPI) — For Lego bricks, demand exceeds supply, the manufacturer said Wednesday, adding it may not be able to deliver toy orders to meet Christmas expectations in European markets.
Lego Group spokesman Roar Trangbaek said, “We will not be able to deliver all of the new orders coming from customers in the remainder of the year in some markets in Europe.”
He did not specify which countries will face shortages of the building-block toys. Trangbaek also didn’t mention any impact on the U.S. market, but said all current orders will be fulfilled.
Sales grew 15 percent in 2014 and another 18 percent in the first half of 2015, prompted largely by 2014’s The Lego Movie. The family-owned firm is expecting record profits this year.
The company, based in Billund, Denmark, has factories in Mexico, China, Denmark, Czech Republic and Hungary, each producing billions of plastic snap-together bricks and other toy-building accessories. Its sales and revenue figures outpace U.S. rivals Mattel and Hasbro, making it the world’s largest toymaker.
“We are running our factories at maximum capacity and will do everything we can to meet demand,” Trangbaek added, noting 60 percent of Lego sales worldwide occur during the Christmas season.
Denmark and Canada were among countries which experienced a Lego shortage prior to Christmas in 2014.
